That being said, there is not exactly an abundance of optimism in the economy, and the markets are down.  Spring can be just the time to clean house – but when it comes to your portfolio, that is *not* what we recommend.

Anyone who has lived through the past 10 years knows this for certain:  the markets and the economy are in a constant state of flux.  

And yet:  some businesses will always do well, because they are essential. Some companies in the fire safety business and health care, for example. 

It is a focus on buying essential services businesses that has served, so well, investors in Newlook Capital’s Industrial and Infrastructure Services Fund.  That is why I was so pleased that Newlook’s President and CEO, Elroy Gust, appeared on our most recent episode of Money Match.

Elroy and his team of more than 20 finance professionals in Burlington, Ontario focus on acquiring, growing and potentially exiting essential service companies that provide recurring income and have EBITDA of less than $10-million.  

Despite the heightened economic and market volatility that has been a hallmark of the past decade, the Fund has performed very well.

Exciting update:  The water well project in Ghana to which we donated is complete!

Our $5,000 annual gift, which we could not have made without our incredible clients, is now providing accessible, safe drinking water for 445 children, their families and their communities through the construction of two new boreholes in the communities of Adum Banso and Wassa Ankasie, Ghana.

As part of the project, there were also local hygiene education workshops held in order to share the importance of proper hand washing, safe water storage and sanitation practices. The participating churches in Ghana plan to sell the water to others in the community, at a low cost, in order to help maintain the fees needed for upkeep of the water well. 

The organization to which we have now donated $20,000 over the past four years – for clean water projects in Ghana as well as Tanzania, Uganda and Nicaragua, is Compassion Canada.
